I'm having trouble publishing to Blogger from Firefox (001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused)... then out of curiousity I tried from IE and everything went fine and even the articles I had tried to publish through Firefox appeared. So I thought maybe the issue was resolved. But I tried again to publish from Firefox to no avail. Now I am trying this through IE as a test... if you see this, something odd is going on!
UPDATE 15th Sept 04
Just so you do't have to trawl through the comments, here is an update:
Blogger came back to me to say the issue should be resolved, that it was an issue with my host blocking their server requests. And that it occurred due to a change on my hosts side of things. They had no idea why switching browsers sometimes seemed to help.
I am having the same issue with BifSniff now, it's on a different host to this site so it could be the same issue - that a change was made at the hosts end of things. However why does switching browser seem to work for me? It doesn't work for others as you can see if you read all the comments....
I'll post any updates here.
UPDATE 06th Oct 04
Those of you still finding this article through Google, if this describes the problem you are having, contact your host and check if they have made changes that could have blocked Bloggers server requests.
Please postabout your experience with this issue, there is a lot of traffic to this post and I am not sure whether the issue is resolved for visitors who find it or not!
UPDATE 20 Dec 04
Three new comments today on this issue... still no solid resolution forthcoming... haven't had the problem myself in a while but judging from the traffic to this page it's ongoing!
oh... make that FOUR new comments!
Have sent Blogger support a request for help on this issue again, to see what the current thinking is...
UPDATE 28 Dec 04
Well, Blogger have not come back to me on the last mail I sent them on the 20th of December, but it is Christmas, so let's see if anything comes back in the New Year.
In the meantime, try the following, all of which have worked for different people who commented here:
- Clear your cache, history and cookies and try to publish.
- Try publishing through a different browser.
- Read this and this
- Under Blogger -> Settings -> Publishing, change the FTP Server name so it begins with "ftp."
- Delete your username and password in the publishing settings in Blogger and it will instead prompt you for this information when you publish. Now you enter your username and password every time you publish.
Hope this helps until Blogger come back with definitive answer!
UPDATE 29th Dec 04
Blogger got back to me with the following:
"Try plugging in your FTP server's IP address into your settings. Let me know if this resolves the problem."
Anyone currently having this issue please try this and let us know here if it resolves the issue.
Thanks,
Frank
UPDATE 4th Jan 05
We haven't received many reports of this problem occurring with users
publishing to external servers. If we start seeing more reports we'll
update our known issues page.
Sincerely, Steve
Blogger Support Team
UPDATE 01 Feb 05
Had this issue AGAIN yesterday. I went to try Steves resolution above but didn't have the IP address... so I contacted my host company and they got it back to me today... but BEFORE I tried it I tried publishing again - and it published fine. So this is some intermittent problem NOT dependant on any of my settings etc... this is a BLOGGER issue...
UPDATE 04 Feb 05
Well, I got back in touch with Steve and he assured me that Blogger engineers were looking into the problem and that they realised now it was an issue at the Blogger end of things. Let's see if they can track it down...
UPDATE03 Nov 05
Had this issue again and had over 300 hits on this page, so I guess a lot of other people had the same problem. None of the 'solutions' compiled here worked for me either. I emailed Blogger again... not going to hold my breath on a meaningful response though seeing as Steve never got back to me since my last update (10 months ago)and a search on Blogger help on this issue turns up nothing.
UPDATE12 Nov 05
Similar problem 3am Irish time: 001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out
Couldn't post to my blogs. Emailed Blogger AGAIN... no answer from the last email.
I sent them the error, the fact I couldn't post to my blogs and neither could others I know of - what happened? Let's see if I get a reply this time.

Have you heard anything on this?
Hi.
I don't know why or how I found your blog, but on my blog the same thing has been happening alllllll day. I have been using IE the whole time though, no other browswers. If I hear anything, I will for sure post the solution.
Hmmm... good point, I don't think I heard back from Blogger on that one... and they usually come back very quickly..
I'll re-check on that and post anything that comes back!
I have had some emails on this as well as the comments above.
Just to clarify, I was using Firefox when the issue arose. I switched to IE and managed to post - not only that but items I had tried to publish with Firefox then appeared (as though they had been queued and publishing a new item through IE pushed them through.)
Shortly thereafter the problem in Firefox just went away.
I think it was Tom R had a similar issue which may have been cookies related but as I didn't clear cookies in Firefox and it then started working I'm not sure if that was the case for me.
I sent a mail to Blogger about it but got nothing back yet which is unusual for them. I will try to contact them again. In the meantime I would appreciate if anyone who reads this would post what browser they use and if they can try an alternative browser and document any results.... Maybe we can get to the bottom of it, or at least give more info to Blogger to try and get it sorted.
Thanks!
Frank
Same thing on my blog - I haven't been able to post to my blog for a day or two now - I don't know whether it has anything to do with the fact that I'm hosting my blog myself and publishing via FTP.
Firefox, IE on my laptop, and Netscape on a Sun workstation - all no go.
No response from Blogger.com personnel yet and no acknowledged problem on the status page. What's going on?
Maybe it's time for me to go nucleus.
Same thing with my blog. I tried to post with FireFox and then switched to IE. I received the same error with both.
001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused
Who all uses godaddy.com to host the site?
I do.
I use GoDaddy.
Funny thing, I was thinking of mentioning it - I use Godaddy too.
Hello,
I think it is godaddy's problem. I was uploading on Friday night and in the middle of my third or fourth upload my ftp transfer was denied. Then I tried three other blogs I run and they were all refused.
I even tried different systems, like OS-9 and OS X and Windows XP, but no cigar. It the past this worked. I also tried ie and safari, but this did not work either.
I suggest we all contact godaddy and raise hell. We should really bombard both blogger and godaddy to look into this.
Best
Eduardo
I sent Blogger.com an e-mail yesterday (I think) - no response yet from them.
I then contacted Godaddy's support a couple of hours ago (via web) and included a link to this page. They've escalated the issue and I'm hoping they'll fix this ASAP.
No fix yet....

9/8/04. Same here, from a Mac user who hosts on GoDaddy as well. Yesterday and Today, both Safari and IE. Any clue as to what the conflict is?
Same problem here - Firefox, GoDaddy - hell, IE doesn't work for me either. GoDaddy escalated my service request and today I got this e-mail message:
"Thank you for your patience. We are unable to locate an attempt made from Blogger.com's published IP addresses to connect to your hosting account. It is possible this is a network issue or an error with Blogger.com. We appreciate your understanding in this matter."
This kindasorta makes sense, as I've had no FTP issues when I manually log in to my hosting account. Something's rotten with Blogger ... and I hope they fix it soon.
First thing I've heard about this, and I thought I was the only one. I published just fine this afternoon, but while I was offline this evening, my most recent posts vanished from my server. It was quite astonishing to see them disappear.
I don't host via GoDaddy, but my domain is hosted with them. But as others have mentioned, I have no problem accessing the files via FTP, and have simply posted a note about the problem with an include.
Oddly, at first I could republish, and even altered my template to show the include, but the posts still didn't show. Now the java.net.Connectionrefused message appears.
Thinking it might be time to make a switch as well.
I don't use GoDaddy either, so it's unlikely to be at their end... unless it's, for example, a common technical setting/issue with hosting providers.
I sent another email to Blogger and I got an automated response followed by a request for the url of the blog I was having trouble with. Which was a bit odd as I sent this thread to them in the mail... anyhoo I guess that means it's being investigated.
So I guess we'll just have to wait and see and just make sure not to let it go dead. Intermittent bugs are always going to be a pain in the ass to track down, so I wonder if they'll be able to even reproduce it...
Has everyone who experienced the issue emailed them?
I STILL haven't gotten an answer from Blogger.com, and that really gets to me. Did the issue go to /dev/null or are they still looking into it? If so, why isn't there an issue on the blogger status or known issues pages?
Yes, I know it's free, but if it doesn't work, WYSIWYG editing or not, I'm not staying around.
Godaddy's offering nucleus with point-and-click setup, and the way things are going, I might just go through the hassle of polishing it for my needs.
Just to elucidate, in my case it's not intermittent - I haven't been able to post for four days at least.
Time to whip up a temporary update to the blog with my html editor....?
How can I feed my addiction without the ability to post?
I guess the downfall to posting manually via ftp is that you do not get listed as updating? Which will not get you hits?
I hate this issue. I have it hosted on blogspot, not FTPed anywhere. I've tried ie, safari, firefox, mozilla on mac and pc and no dice. I can't publish anything. 10/8/04
Folks--I think it's GoDaddy after all.
You may want to check if your host uses active ftp. Unfortunately, the new
version of Blogger no longer supports active ftp (due to a new, more
scalable network design); passive ftp and sftp are supported however, so
my suggestion would be to consult with your hosting provider about
enabling either of those ftp versions. Sftp is preferable, as it is
encrypted.
You can find out more information in our Knowledge Base at

and/or
http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=93&query=ftp%20errors&topic=0&type=f
Sincerely,
Blogger Support
This is not necessarily the case with Godaddy. Blogger has not supported passive ftp for a while, over six months at least. I had one of my blogs for over a year and a half.
there is something going on with blogger. check their status section... I think it might be a combination of both godaddy and blogger updating their servers and conflicting. We need to stay on top of this.
1) At least one Blogger.com-hosted user is experience this failure, and
2) active FTP is not the same as ActiveFTP, which is a shareware ftp program.
5 *DAYS* WITHOUT BLOGGING AND COUNTING.....
This post has been removed by the author.
Now the error message on all my blogs changed to this:
"001 java.net.UnknownHostException: netartreview.net"
someone is doing something... I wonder if it s blogger?
Ah, finally!
It took a good while, but it's finally working. I did get an "001 java.net.UnknownHostException:" but just two minutes ago it was working again.
I talked with GoDaddy and they said they have passive FTP. Said it was Blogger's issue. I don't have this issue with Hostway, BTW.
I can post and edit again as of 3:45 PM CDT.
I am still having problems. I just got a message from godaddy explaining that they are now working together with blogger to fix the problem. Check the word:
Dear Eduardo Navas,
Thank you for your reply. We are currently working with Blogger's support team, and investigating why this problem started, and how to remedy it. We do appreciate that you've done your own research, and sent it to us.
Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.
Got this one from Godaddy some minutes ago:
We appreciate your patience in this matter. This issue has now been resolved. It appears that the new version of Blogger no longer supports active ftp (due to a new, more scalable network design); passive ftp and sftp are supported so we had to make some adjustments to our hosting plans.
Seems Blogger really *did* mean "active FTP" and not "ActiveFTP"... they should clear up their FAQ's
I am now able to post. I got a similar message as above.
Eduardo
Got replies to both my queries on this issue from Blogger today, essentially saying "This
may have been part of a temporary problem that has since been corrected".
So unless anyone else is still experiencing it I guess that's it!
Cheers,
Frank
I asked Blogger what the issue actually was and they said my host was blocking their server requests.
I now have the same error on BifSniff which is with a seperate host - I don't know if the issue arises due to changes at Bloggers end or changes at host end...
Anyone any further info?
Blogger came back very quickly to say the error was a result of changes made by my host.
They akso said they did not know why changing browser seemed to sometimes get around the issue.
Which is all very odd because I got the error again on the BifSniff blog using Firefox, and again when I switched to IE it seemed to work fine...???
I just recently had the same problem posting while using a laptop with Windows XP and the latest version of IE. My host is hostdime.com.
I was able to post right afterward using my desktop PC which has the same OS and browser as the laptop.
I'm having the same problem right now, and it 100% HAS to be a blogger issue no matter how much they claim it isn't. I have nothing to do with Godaddy. My domain is through 1and1.com, and as far as server changes from the host go, I am 100% sure there haven't been any since I own the server and do all the work on it. I don't go through a hosting company. So as far as blogger trying to pass the buck to someone else. No dice, it is 100% on their end
hi there - i had this problem across two dozen blogs hosted with a few different ISPs and my solution seems to work for all of my situations.
Under Blogger -> Settings -> Publishing
change the FTP Server name so it begins with "ftp."
i.e., ftp.hostname.com instead of hostname.com
your mileage may vary , but it worked for me at http://hollywood-elsewhere.com and http://rahoi.com
--jon rahoi
I discovered last night that I was unable to post using Safari or Camino, getting that same 001 java.net error, but just tried IE for Mac and it worked. My host is laughingsquid, which has made no system changes that I am aware of, and I have been able to ftp into my web directory on own with no trouble. Damned peculiar.
I talked to GoDaddy on 10/14 and they told me that I have to use passive FTP instead of active FTP. Just delete your username and password in the publishing settings in Blogger and it will instead prompt you for this information when you publish. Now I have to enter my username and password every time I publish, but at least it works now!
12/14. I'm having this problem, too, on my site. I just emailed Blogger about it, and oddly enough, I was posting through Firefox and my domain was registered through GoDaddy.com. However, switching browsers didn't resolve the problem. So it looks like Blogger still hasn't fixed this issue.
your post is aug... i just did a litle google search for '001 java.net.UnknownHostException:' and this post popped first!... thanks, for that. anyhoo, I am posting on blogger in Firefox and i got that error and switched to IE cause you said that and it did work... hmmm, ill do some contacting...
I know this is an old post but I found it off Google. I'm still having trouble posting to my blog. I'm with surpasshosting.com and have been now for almost two years. I use Firefox but when I tried posting with IE it didn't work either. This is really annoying. Any updates?
had same problem with IE6 (error: 001 java.net.UnknownHostException), starting this morning (12/15/04). emailed my host, and they verified they hadn't changed settings. emailed blogger, but haven't heard back yet.
however, problem is now gone. could be unrelated, but it went away just after i deleted cookies and cached files via IE.
Wow, just got three comments on this in the last five minutes... is something going on?
It's been quiet here for a while and now this...
If anyone hears anything interesting from Blogger, please do come back and post it!
Thanks!
20 dec 04.
Can people post their solutions to this problem? I'm having the same problem with GenuineASP.com

I was having this problem using NetCaptor which uses an IE engine. I switched to straight IE and it worked fine.
Have been publishing for a couple of weeks and never a problem before.
...Bob
I just started to have this problem described above when I changed webhosts. (I am registered with godaddy and my host is 1and1. My old host is brinkster.)
I once couldn't get my atom.xml (which validated) to be recognized by feedburner as a valid feed after changing hosts because the new DNS entries needed to propogate and feedburner admitted they were caching the DNS entries longer than they needed to.
Is this the same type of situation?
HI, it's me, Anonymous, again. Blogger finally published after one day. I think I just had to allow the DNS to propogate.
Well, I'm glad that's sorted for you Anon, I still experience the issue described above from time to time...
I have now plugged in my IP address, but it could be months before I really know if it worked because the issue is so intermittent...
I'm still having the same problem.
YUP...I'm having the exact same problem.
Here's what I've tried. Everything on this thread PLUS
I did did everything on a Mac with IE, Safari, Firefox and Opera. And then on Windows XP - IE6, IE5, Firefox, Opera. I changed FTPs and Passwords...blah,blah,blah.
So I decided just to post on the generic blogspot.com... and it gave me the same error. WHAT's UP
Hi IndiePlay, the latest from Blogger is that they acknowledge an issue and engineers are looking into it..
However, I urge you to email Blogger and complain!!!
This is the only way the issue will be prioritised...
http://www.blogger.com/problem.g
Good luck!
This is what I sent to Blogger:
I've never had a problem till this morning. Then I got this message: 001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused
I have attempted all of the below on Windows XP (Firefox, IE6, IE5 and Opera) and Mac OSX (Firefox, Opera, IE5, Safari).
Things I've done which did not work:
1.Clear your cache, history and cookies and try to publish.
2. Try publishing through a different browser.
3. Read entire Blogger help section
4. Under Blogger -> Settings -> Publishing, change the FTP Server name so it begins with "ftp."
4. Delete your username and password in the publishing settings in Blogger and it will instead prompt you for this information when you publish. Now you enter your username and password every time you publish.
I was so frustrated I finally decided to go back and publish on my original indieplay.blogspot.com AND I GOT THE SAME ERROR.
"001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused"
Because I'm getting this error to publish directly to Blogspot as well as when I try and publish to my server through FTP, I know this is a Blogger issue.
PLEASE HELP
Ok..the wierd thing is, it just worked... I'm worried about the next time it will shut off and not work.
I wa havin the same error message, and I too switched to IE to re-publish and it worked for me also.
well believe it or not, i'm on IE6, i cleaned my cache, deleted the cookies then it worked on the first try.
I am having the same problem ( 001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused )
I have also reported it 3 times without responce Any other blogs out there .... ones that work ?
I wanted to get this running on www.ukmp3.co.uk guess i wont ?
Hi,
this problem is driving me nuts.
Here are some insights:
http://www.bloggerforum.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=169&forum=1&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&start=20
Do you know decent alternatives to Blogger.com?
Thank you
Yeah, it's a bit of a pain... tha last thing I was told by Blogger support was that it was a known issue and would be sorted... but I still don't see it on the known issues page...
Anyway, I have a few friends who swear by WordPress if you are looking for an alternative. I'm told you need to know you're way around computers a bit more than with Blogger... it's a bit more techie.
But it's got great functionality and some wonderful plugins are available...
http://wordpress.org/
Thanks for all this info. I have had this intermittent problem (001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused) on two blogs on external servers for sometime and they usually just go away after a few days. I have now been having this problem on one blog for 2 weeks. Checked with my host and tried everything in your articles and comments, to no avail. Still waiting on blogger Support.
Any new ideas?
Thanks again!
martin
Just came upon your blog as I too am having this problem.
Also using Firefox, and it was working fine earlier today when I was able to post. In fact, I have never had this issue occur before. Suddenly here it is, and I cannot post to my server.
Gonna go try another browser just for kicks...
Tried another browser. No dice.
Tried entering the numerical ip instead of the name server as some have suggested...no dice.
Tried entering ftp. before the server address...no dice.
Tried making a new FTP account for blogger to use...no dice.
Joy. I give up. Exactly how I want to spend an hour or two of my life.
I get this error message when trying to republish my entire blog -- i.e. it publishes maybe 10-15% (my blog has >700 posts) then craps out with the connection refused error. It stops at a different page every time. My host swears it's not them.
The rest of you, do you have big blogs or small ones? (Ie how many posts?)
I am having similar problem. I tried to move my blog to my server but it just won't publish. This is the error I get:001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed outarchive/2005_12_01_archive.html.
I believe my ftp path is correct because blogger creates a blog folder on my server. This has been happening with Firefox but I tried it with IE to no avail.
I get the exact same message, including the Dec 2005 date, as Pat in the comment above, so perhaps this is again a problem on blogger's end. I have already emailed them about it. As well, I also get a could not connect to blogger.com flashing on once in a while on the edit page, just below the “Save as Draft” and “Publish Post” button. This occurs on any computer, so it's not my connection.
i'm having the same problem. For a few days now I keep getting: 001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed/
I have tried on Safari. I.E., and Firefox. I'm on Mac 0s 10. This has been a really frustrating experience. I've been focused on this for two days straight now.
Any one who experiences a change, I'd appreciate it.
(shawn@doodlegirl.com) thanks!
Just sent my third email in five days to Blogger.com:
Begin forwarded message:
Date: December 6, 2005 15:11:00 EST
To: Blogger Support support@blogger.com
Subject: Re: [#329769] unable to publish at all -- errors [3]
Still awaiting your reply.........!!!
It has now been five (5) days since I first asked for Blogger.com help.
Hello?
Dec 5, 2005, at 21:17
Dear Blogger.com Technical Support,
When am I going to hear back from you on my issue (below)????????
The problem persists and is apparently and indeed related to FTP for non-blogspot blogs, based on six Blogger.com blogs I have created.
All FTP postings to non-blogpot websites (in my case, all handled by ixWebhosting.com) receive (as of Thursday evening, December 1, 2005) the same error messages:
001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out[DOMAIN...archive.html ]
I have contacted the host, ixWebhosting. They tested FTP connections, which are nearly instantaneous. I second that: from my iMac G5 using Fetch software, I am able to FTP from my computer. That leaves Blogger.com as the source of the problem.
Furthermore, ixWebhosting advises that timeouts with their host occur within 60-180 seconds: Blogger.com takes far longer to generates its error message (I would guess 5-10 minutes -- so long that I have never stuck around on a posting page to find out).
Ladies and Gentlmen of Google / Blogger.com, please respond ASAP with an update.
HELP!
Dec 2, 2005, at 11:13:
Dear Blogger.com,
I am unable to publish anything (posts, template changes, setting changes), which I change by FTP. All I get is timeout errors -- for the archive files of each month.
So, if I try to post or update for December 2005, I get this message from Blogger.com:
001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out[domain].com/archive/2005_12_01_archive.html
If I try to post or update for November 2005, I get this message from Blogger.com:
001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out[domain].com/archive/2005_11_01_archive.html
If I try to update just the Index for my template, I get this message from Blogger.com:
001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out[domain].com/archive/2005_12_01_archive.html
This does not happen on my Blogspot blog...
I assume the problem lies with Blogger.com, since you overwrite or rewrite archives with each post's publishing. Perhaps the problem is FTP related (on your side)? -- I don't know.
All I do know is that I have been unable to publish for 18 hours, that I publish daily and am now overdue, that I get these error messages -- and that I want you to investigate and fix this problem ASAP.

it's really starting to look like blogger is dead in the water isn't it?
Maybe they will prove me wrong, but sending emails to blogger support is like shouting into a black hole...
God knows how many emails I've sent them.
You can almost see the tumbleweed...
I am also continuing to have these problems since Thursday Dec 1. I have not been able to publish anything to my blog, which I host on my own site, not on blogger itself.
There were errors. (Hide details ...)
001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed [domain/subdomain]/2005_12_01_archive.html
My provider has looked into it and likewise it is not on their end. I just tried changing my password in blogger and republishing and, for some reason, it does begin to publish but once again stalls and a similar time out message appears. I have yet to hear back from blogger, but I guess we have to remember that blogger is a free service. I'd prefer to pay something to assist in the responses to problems and errors, though. Hopefully they are solving this since it obviously is affecting a number of people.
Phil Harland
Twelve days later and it still isn't working for me.
A friend who's FTP path begins with "www" works fine to her site. But mine begins with "/name.com/"
I think that might be the problem.
I'm on ixwebhosting.
Same issue here. I tried changing my login to see if it was connecting- sure enough, if I put a fake login I get an error message right away. But if I put in the real login it stalls while transferring files. No response from blogger on this.
PS- I've also been having these problems since Dec 1. It's the 17th today and this is getting frustrating- as Phil says I'd rather pay for reliability than face these type of issues.
Seriously... start looking into wordpress guys. I really think Blogger is dying if not dead.
I'd be interested in an alternative (in fact I'd pay for one!) but don't have the time to invest in converting everything over.
That's pretty much where I'm at too Jeremy...!
I had to abandon Blogger for the same problem. Impossible to get real answer from them about it. They simply do not know.
I have done several of the "fixes" mentioned in the comments and post. No good. Just sits at 0%
I have ixwebhosting but i think it has to do with BLogger.
